It is very convenient to use your mobile phone to get the computer internet access. You do not have to go through the hassles of finding Ethernet port, pay for Wi-Fi etc. Instead of doing all this use your mobile to get your computer to connect to the internet. This process is called “tethering”, you need to do a few things before you tether your computer.
Here are the requirements for it.
3G or 4G phone
Your phone must have the capability of going online before your PC can go online via your phone. For Internet access you will need a 3G, 3.5G or 4G network. 3G or 3.5G phones are common and are quite common. 4G networks have quicker access to the internet. The present Smartphones support 3G and 4G phones.
Data Plan
You will need a data plan if you want to connect your computer to the internet with your mobile. You will have to sign up for 3G though your phone is 3G compatible for getting online. Some providers offer consumers limited data plan while the others offer unlimited data plan. When you tether your computer you need to be careful of the data usage as some cell phone users offer limited data only and when you exceed it, you will be charged.
Tethering Supported phones
Not every 3G phone can be tethered, it needs a compatible software for tethering. For this you must check your phone manual to know if tethering is possible. All iPhone, Android phones with OS 2.2 at least and RIM phones support tethering.
Carriers that support Tethering
Its not just the phones that need to support tethering but also the carriers too. You will have to check for a plan with your carrier to know whether it supports tethering or not. Some time it does and sometimes if it does not you can pay for updating to a plan for tethering.
Computer Connection
This is the most obvious of all the requirements, you need to connect your phone to your computer in some way. The most common way is using a USB cable of your cell phone. Other options are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Use any of the options for connecting your computer to your cell phone.
Other things
Apart from the above listed requirements you will need a computer with OS of Windows or Mac OS. For Windows computers you will need a OS of minimum Windows XP. iPhone must have iTunes 9.2, Android 2.2 devices do not need an extra software and Blackberry phones need Blackberry Desktop Software.
