Smartphones are a combination of computers, music players and game consoles. They are minor version of personal computers. All the precautions we take for Personal computers like using anti-virus software, not viewing emails if not from a trust worthy source etc also are for smart phones. However, smart phones have other security issues too. Everyone using a smartphone should be aware of potential security risks. There are just basic precautions toward these security concerns off.
Jailbreaking
Jailbreaking Smartphones have become common these days, so that users can switch from their existing carriers or to download software on their phone. This especially applies to iPhone. Apple has a strong software control over app stores and blocks all the apps that risk security.. But jailbreaking the phone opens the path to malicious software attack. Third party apps that might be malware but disguised as normal tools and games can cause a theft of user’s private info.
Malware
Malicious software is not just a security threat to jail broken iPhones but also for smartphones like Android, Blackberry and Symbian phones which have innumerable apps available for download. These phones do not have strong security control over apps unlike Apple. So, users must take care to download apps only from trustworthy sources. The open platform allows many amateurs to write apps, these poorly written software without any intention may make your smart phone vulnerable to attacks.
Phone Theft
Smartphone theft is a big security issue which might put you in danger if you have too much confidential info stored in it. Unlike the ordinary phones a smartphone is used for private and business purposes, so it is obvious that it has some confidential data and if you lose the phone you might fall into serious trouble. Always provide password protection for your phone and data protection. Most of the smartphones come with backup software, use it. Some carriers even lock your phone remotely to prevent somebody from using it in case you lose it.
Insecure Wi-Fi networks
There are free wireless networks at public places like hotels, restaurants etc. These networks are insecure as they are not encrypted and when you send or receive sensitive data using these networks they pose a risk of your system being hacked. Always use public networks only if they are encrypted and they ask you for a password when you try to use the network. This means the network is protected. Access only sites that have web address that starts with “https”. This is a protected site.
These are some of the security issues with Smartphones. Take a little extra care and you will be safe. Find more by Buzz2fone Mobile Tech news blog
