Driving and talking on the cell phone is equally dangerous as the drinking and driving. Though many say that, you can use a cell phone while driving provided you use hands free, but this not the case absolutely. It is still dangerous even though you keep your hands on the steering while talking.
Laws
Around 8 states in the united states prohibit driving and using a cell phone and 30 states prohibit texting while driving. However, there are no laws that prohibit the use of cell phone with a hands free device. It is a belief that when the driver has his hands on the wheel even though he is talking on the phone, it will be safe and the distractions are reduced and therefore the accidents.
Driving
A study revealed that the driving style when talking on the phone is similar to those who drink and drive. The accident numbers only slightly differs in the two cases. So, it says that even though hands are still on the steering while taking a call it is not safe entirely. There is no significant protection even when you use a hands free device for talking on the phone. The only way to be safe is to give undivided attention to driving and avoid distractions like talking or texting on the cell phone while driving.
Bluetooth
In other situations apart from driving a cell phone hands free device can prove beneficial. One such useful device is the Bluetooth. It is a short-range radio communication device. It can send and receive voice communication on a cell phone within the range of 30 feet.
Voice Recognition
Smartphones like the iPhone and Android phones have in built voice recognition system, which recognizes your voice and makes a call or sends a text. You can just speak what you want to send in the text and the voice recognition system recognizes it, types the message, and sends it. Though it is a hands free way to operate the cell phone, yet not safe completely as it still needs to look at the phone and press some buttons.
Though technology has improved and you can use your cell phone with your hands, still the hands free use of phone while driving is not safe.
