Apple iPad’s touch screen was designed to only responds to a finger tip instead of a stylus. The accuracy is compared with the use of a stylus when compared to a finger tip.  iPad or any other Apple product is not provided with a stylus. However, manufacturers from 3 rd party are developing  tools that touch compatible with the iPad.  Apple iPad touch, does not respond to all kinds of styli, so when users buy a stylus they should make sure that it is compatible with the  iPad or one that is compatible with the capacitive touch.

Touch Technology

There are two kinds of touch screen technology available in mobile phones. They are resistive touch and capacitive touch. The former one in a screen consists of a dual layers which when pressed produces a current. These need a hard and narrow pressure for them to work. On the other hand the latter ones are seen in iPads. These kind of touch screens use electrical conductivity of a finger for the disruption of the electrostatic field of the screen. The touch screen present in the iPad has a covering that is hard and so they do not need a pressure for the touch to function but still they cannot be worked through gloves.

Styli compatible with iPad

A stylus for capacitive touch screen has to conduct electricity same as that of humans to work on the screen. For that they  use rubber tips made from soft silicon which are deformed when they are used on the screen like when touched with a finger. Choose narrow tipped styli so that they offer control with precision. The wide tipped stylus emulate direct tap with fingers.

Incompatible Styli

iPad accepts only the capacitive touch screen styli and not the resistive one. The resistive styli are narrow and have tips similar to pen and are made with plastic of hard type and metal. Active styli that are used combined with tablets do not function on iPad, because they need special hardware in the surface of writing.

 Styli for Special Uses

For alternate usage there are many iPad styli available. For painting or drawing  are available styli with brush like tip or teeth shaped tip. For drawing a line or similar activities you need a styli with clear tip. There are many kinds of styli like marker shaped styli, styli on fingers. If the stylus is compatible with capacitive touch screens it will work on iPad.

These are the types of styli that work on a ipad even though Apple does not manufacture them or recommend using them.
