Has the iPhone 6 killed the iPad?

The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus have done extremely good business for Apple. For the last quarter of 2015, the Californian company reported revenues of $74.6 billion, most of which came from mobile sales which saw its sales increase by 46 per cent in the same period. Now everyone at the company must be delighted with the mobile’s success, however, they also look like they could fall victim to their success. With the phone’s growing popularity is there really that much of a demand for an iPad anymore?

In data recently published by Pocket, a service that allows people to save stories and videos to read/watch later on, it was shown that Apple users are seeing their habits changed, for the worse if you are a fan of the iPad.

Screen size was the big change with the current crop of iPhones. The 6 comes with a 4.7-inch screen, and the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen. In contrast, the iPad Air has a 9.7-inch screen, and the iPad Mini has a 7.9-inch screen.

The study found that those using a 5s and an iPad were likely to use their tablet for 45 per cent of their consumption. However, those with a 6 see their tablet consumption fall to 28 per cent, while 6 Plus users stand at just 20 per cent.

Bigger screens have changed everything. Just one generation ago there were things you would forego doing on your mobile as it was easier to use your tablet, but now it has all changed. People are willing to use their phone to watch television shows on Netflix, cash out in the Premier League betting, play Football Manager and many other things that had been considered staples of the tablet.

Working on the assumption that this trend is only going to continue – more people will be getting mobile upgrades in the next 12 months – it seems likely that the iPad is certainly on its way out.

What is more, Apple won’t do too much to stop this from happening. The iPhone, which sells for £539 in the UK, is the company’s main priority. It makes far more money than the iPad. The new iPad Air 2 has a retail price of £399 and therefore Apple will be delighted to see it establish market dominion in the smartphone market, even if that is at the expense of the iPad.

You would be hard pressed to say that the iPhone is not killing the iPad, but it will never be able to deliver that ultimate death blow. The iPad still has a use in society, albeit a diminishing one, and is more of a competitor to laptops than it is mobiles, so there is still a market place for it.

In Apple’s perfect world, consumers would be treating themselves to an Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, and MacBook on a regular basis. They know this is never going to happen and are instead just happy to see their phone fend off the threat of Samsung and if that comes at the cost of the iPad then so be it.
