Wireless hotspots also called Wi-Fi are changing how we work. These WLANs or wireless local area networks provide us with high speed internet access at public places like cafes, hotels, restaurants etc. These hot spots can be found at many locations all around the world. These offer us many benefits but they also pose security risks. The reason is as easy it is for to access the internet through these hotspots, so is it for hackers too. They can enter your system with ease. But there is a solution too and you can access it without trouble. Here are some tips for using Wi-Fi securely.

  • Always connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots with caution. These sites are easily hacked because naturally people are attracted when they hear about Free Wi-Fi. So, before you use them confirm the network name and its security by asking someone at your location.
  • There will be no security or encryption at public Wi-Fi spots. So, beware of the information that you send or receive using these networks. So avoid online banking or sending credit card information on public hot spots. If it is urgent and you have to use them then always access sites with “https”. This means you are using a secure page.
  • Use virtual private network or VPN. This will encryption of your data and prevent hacking.  Use VPN when you are using public Wi-Fi.
  • Use firewall to prevent getting hacked. Most of the computers have in built firewall but if you do not have one then you can download third party firewall like Kaspersky or McAfee or AVG.
  • Look out for warnings. Do not take them easily. Error codes pop up on your computer every time. You will not have to worry too much about it but you should watch for the site’s certification expiry or invalidity. If you see this then it means that your data is being intercepted as hackers. If this happens then manually type the URL in the address bar. If the problem still persists then shut down your computer and avoid that Wi-Fi hot spot. It means the security has been compromised.
  •  It might seem a little silly to say but there are still people who peek in to your phone when you are working on it. They try to peek at your email address, password and other important info. So beware of such people.

These are tips for using Wi-Fi securely. Follow them and ensure your safety.
