These days irrespective of age and profession it is necessary to stay connected to the internet. Without it, it is difficult to stay connected to family and friends, work and even enjoy life. It all works well when we are at home or at work as we have our internet connection. But what about, when we are travelling? Is, it still possible to access internet? You do not have to worry; internet access is available all around the world today.  But the availability and reliability might change. Finding one can be a challenge. Here are some tips for using internet while you are travelling.

  • Stay at places like hostels or hostels which offer the residents internet services for free of cost. If you are not sure it the place is having internet access call the reception and ask for help. Also ask for details like number of routers in each floor, internet access is free of cost or not etc. If you do not have your own PC with you then ask for availability of public computers.
  • Use internet in places like coffee shops which offer free Wi-Fi. Much major coffee shops or hang out places in foreign countries offer free internet. Look for the sign of  Wi-Fi on the front of café door or window.
  • If you find it hard to find a café or hangout places with free Wi-Fi access then look for Internet cafes where you can pay hourly fee for using a computer with internet.
  • Buy a broadband access plan which comes with USB modem. There are many countries that offer prepaid internet plans with some amount of Internet access. These do not even require a permanent address. So, it is ideal for travelers.
  •  Buy a local cell phone SIM card or a cheap phone with Internet browser. SIM cards are cheaper but you need to have a unlocked phone and also needs to be compatible with international networks. These SIM cards should have a prepaid plan with internet access.
  • Use wired connectivity. Some hotels offer wired Ethernet along with Wi-Fi signal. Wired internet is more reliable than Wi-Fi as most of the people use Wi-Fi and the traffic is oversaturated making it slow. Wired connection saves you all this trouble.
  • Be careful when you are using internet on cruise ships. They charge you for internet at a very high rate. Even though you have unlimited data plan on your phone, using it on a cruise can be expensive because they have their own cell phone tower and you will be charged for roaming at the rate set by the cruise. So use it only when extremely important.
