Being a co-founder and CTO of a start-up, hiring a core team wasn’t exactly easy. I was waiting on the candidates who comprise of a perfect blend of passion, dedication and experience. The wait is long, but with the right amount of effort, it becomes worth it.

My experience with hiring has nudged me to deduce some effective strategies, here they are:

Build Your Startup with a Mission & Vision

During the early stages of your business, you won’t have adequate financial resources to offer your employees big paychecks; in theory, your employees should stick with you by virtue of their dedication towards the company and the passion that they share with you.

I suggest you build a company with a great vision and mission that excites talented job seekers. According to a study, 73% of workers who work for a “vision-driven” feel positive. Being a founder, you must be able to present your company in the best way possible to your potential employees.

 A Great Place to Work

Word of mouth is still a great tool to find great talents. If your current employees are pleased with their work environment, they will definitely talk about it outside of work as well. So, ensure that  your workplace has a great environment.

Remember, employees who enjoy their jobs work harder and add more value to a business.

Consider Rehiring

Sometimes, you come across employees who quit, whatever the reason may be, should they wish to rejoin at some point, rehiring them can be the right decision sometimes, considering that he/she has experience working for your company.

So the point is, give all your employees a fair treatment even if they are leaving so that you can reconnect with them smoothly later on.

Understand the Position You Want to Fill

My expertise resides in the area of technology,  however,  I was struggling to find which skills are essential for a specific position regarding the technical front. As a recruiter, you must know exactly what qualities and skills you are searching for in an ideal candidate.

You may seek the help of websites such as LinkedIn to identify the required skills for certain jobs.

Search for Candidates on Social Media

Social media is often used by businesses to promote their product or service, 92% of recruiters use social media network to find candidates.

For most HR professionals, Linkedin is an ideal recruitment tool that offers different hiring strategies such as “Advanced Search” where you can look for candidates based on their skills, locations, and job titles.

On Facebook, you can create social media campaigns for your company’s hiring process. Emphasise more on visualized content such as photos and videos, this sub-type of content is way more engaging than standard text.

Twitter has also become a good network for people who are looking for jobs, so make sure you’re active on this platform too. Create hashtags that potential candidates can search for. Also, write engaging job posting tweets and start collaborative interactions with candidates exhibiting interest.

Hiring the right employees can make or break your business. If you’re serious about filling your startups with A-players, keep using and building strategies like the above.
