Voice over internet protocol service or in short VoIP allows users to connect to others over internet for voice communication. User’s computer encodes the voice and sends it through the internet to the recipient. At the receiver’s end the signal is converted to voice. This connection between the VoIP service and standard phone is connected by VoIP telephone service provider. This connection allows users to use a internet connected phone via an adapter to call the regular telephone numbers. The cost is much lower than conventional telephone service.

Here is the difference between VoIP telephone service and the regular telephone service.

Technology

In conventional phones your voice is sent as an analog signal through a wire, and the power supply is provided by the telephone company through a wire. Signals through high capacity cables are sent for long distance calls and there is always a connection between you and the recipient. VoIP services encode user’s voice as data and is sent over  the internet and different parts of the data is sent through different routes to the recipient. The software on the recipient’s computer converts it into data.

Service Quality

Conventional telephone service always keeps a constant connection between the caller and the recipient, the quality of the call is stable, good voice reproduction, less interference and reliable call completion. VoIP telephone services depend on the internet connection speed, speed of the internet of the caller and the recipient for good call quality. If there is any delay in any of the mentioned three, call quality will be bad. There may be problems due to technical problems or overloading.

Emergency Calling

Conventional telephone service relies on wire with a physical connection known to the telephone company In case of an emergency when a user calls the 911 then they can determine the origin and address of the caller. VoIP telephone services can be accessed from any internet connection and so have no fixed address. The FCC requires interconnected telephone suppliers to keep a track of addresses to which they supply their VoIP service and make them available to emergency service.

Flexibility and Cost

Conventional telephone service is provided at a fixed rate and cannot be moved and it costs users extra bucks to make long distance calls and for using additional facilities. Whereas VoIP can be accesses through any Internet connection and so has no fixed location. So, with no regard to the location the service provider can assign any code to any customer. Customers can request area code so that others can call them from conventional phones without paying for long distance charges. The cost of long distance calls over VoIP is inexpensive and much lesser than the ones made from conventional phones. Also, additional services are free or inexpensive on VoIP as they are software based.

These are some basic differences between VoIP services and conventional telephone services.
